I have 4 H&R/NEF single shot shotguns, including 2 12 gauge 3" chamber 28" BBL Mod choke guns, one a "Topper", the other a "Pardner". I love all of them and I shoot an H&R almost every single day.
They don't break, they don't fail, they don't miss. I shoot all manner of pests, although mostly I just target shoot and such. These guns throw a 6" pattern of #9 low brass at 25 yards, and a 3" pattern at 10 yards. I have an 8" pattern with 3" 00 Buck at 35 yards, which does hurt the shoulder a bit, due to the gun's light weight.
If the recoil bothers you, you can dump about 1000 airgun BBs into the stock, problem solved. They mount easily, and the bead sights get the job done. They are very easy to break down, and to clean them just open the action and swab out the barrel, and oil the metal, which takes almost no time at all.
I would recommend an H&R single shot to anyone who wants an inexpensive, high quality gun. Not exactly a tactical Home Defense gun, but great for hunting, plinking, pests, and targets.. Whenever I have suitable company, we break out the H&Rs and have some fun.
