From the initial design stage, an item and each of its particulars are treated as though they’ll be used by one of our Uniformed Service members. Knight’s utilizes the feedback received from Military and Law Enforcement personnel to ascertain what they need and the best way to fulfill that need. Once an idea has been developed, a prototype is created and tested prior to being put into production.
Once an item has been finalized, the raw materials are chosen to best accommodate its intended use. Their Mazak Machines and operators process and shape every item with the same standards of care and precision as if each one was going to be used by our Law Enforcement and Military personnel. After the materials have been formed into the familiar shapes of rails, receivers or accessories, they’re placed in the care of our Quality Control personnel.
KAC utilizes the latest technology to ensure that each part manufactured conforms to the highest standards. During assembly, the proper elements are combined and categorized into Commercial and Military weapon systems. The E3 Enhanced Bolt from Knights Armament features a number of components designed to make this bolt the most durable and reliable bolt available. It is a proprietary bolt specifically designed for our SR15and 16 models. The E3 Bolt boasts several features that add to the its overall performance such as the enlarged bolt face, rounded lugs, reduced cam pin, and proprietary extractor and firing pin designs.
This E3 Bolt is manufactured with an enlarged bolt face that provides more positive engagement in the chamber and lugs which are rounded to help to reduce chipping, cracking and snapping. This strengthened design helps to increase the life of the bolt and ensure a proper seating each time the weapon cycles.
The E3 Bolts extractor design is also a unique achievement that helps to provide an extremely reliable component. Its shaped like a rounded T and sometimes referred to as a butterfly shape. The pivot point of the extractor is shifted forward to help balance out the extractor and apply constant pressure on the shell which reduces cases of extraction failures. Another strong feature of the unique design of this extractor is the use of two full size extractor springs, as opposed to the standard micro spring. This allows for a reduction of relative compression while the extractor is in motion and provides a failsafe in case one spring fails. The bolt will continue to function properly and afford a user the opportunity to continue with their mission or firing schedule.
The E3 Bolt is designed with a thinner Cam Pin and Firing Pin whose overall size has been reduced. The thinner Cam Pin allows for a thicker bolt web which is a common failure point in normal bolts. The reduction of the Firing Pin size is to accommodate the thinner Cam Pin.
The full capabilities of the E3 Bolt are realized when exposed to full auto or extremely high cyclic firing rates yet the bolt performs gracefully under casual firing conditions. This component was designed to be exposed to the most stressful and unrelenting conditions and exceed expectations for durability and service life.
Knights Armament employs a hammer-forging process on a number of our barrels and chambers, which serves to increase the quality of their interior finish, as well as increasing the durability and life of the barrel. These barrels are then Chrome-lined to further the lifespan of the barrel and increase its resistance to fouling and corrosion.
The first step is to take a drilled barrel and hone the interior to a fine, clean finish. The barrel is then placed onto a mandrel with the rifling pattern ground in relief across it. This setup is then placed between opposing power hammers which literally hammer the barrel onto the pattern found on the mandrel. The barrel setup is rotated and the hammers continue to forge the barrel into its final shape. Once they complete this process, the barrels are heat treated in order to relieve the inherent stress created during this process.
The Chroming process is applied after the Hammer Forging. At this point the interior of the barrel is basically lined with a layer of chrome and bonded to the forged steel. Chrome is approximately twice as hard as standard 4150 steel and also resists the lead and powder that bare steel will normally absorb into its pores. This allows the barrel to be exposed to the higher temperatures and pressures of high firing schedules while still maintaining accuracy, durability and reliability. The end result is a denser, stronger barrel that will endure a higher round life than a Standard Stainless Steel or Chrome Moly barrel
All of the weapons available from Knights Armament come equipped with a 4.5lb, 2-Stage Match Trigger. This type of trigger mechanism uses a system where, during the rearward squeeze of a trigger, it cycles through two stages of resistance.
The first stage is a no-poundage stage where hardly any resistance is felt during the rear-ward squeeze. There is a center point at which point resistance is felt and the second stage of the trigger begins. At this point, 4.5 pounds of force is required to squeeze the trigger through the second stage and cause the weapon to cycle.
Our 2-stage trigger is meant to inform a shooter of exactly where their weapon is going to fire. This bolsters a firer's confidence and can also assist in reducing trigger jerk, thereby increasing accuracy. The 4.5lb 2-Stage Trigger from Knights Armament is a highly calibrated and smooth component that is sure to be a welcome addition to any setup.
The evolution of the Universal Rail Extending (URX) begins over 20 years ago with Knights Armament pioneering the Modular Weapon System. Knights URX is a lightweight, free-floating, continuous top rail system that was designed to give a shooter the most diverse amount of placement options for any accessories they deemed helpful.
In an effort to relieve all weight, contact and stress from the barrel, the URX component was designed to be free-floating. This means that your barrel is not supporting or coming in contact with the rail system other than at the receiver. Under high firing rates, when the weapon's barrel is heating up and undergoing greater amounts of stress, this system ensures accuracy is not affected by mounted accessories or a shooter's manipulation of those accessories.
Several variations of the URX are available depending on your needs. They come in a variety of lengths, from our URX Carbine at 7 to our URX 3.1 7.62 at 14. Knights latest systems are the URX 3.1 systems which feature a flat continuous top rail, several inches of mounting rails at the fore and rear ends of the sides and bottom, and slick sided portions in the middle sections. These slick sided portions provide a slimmer diameter for grip as well as an overall reduction in weight. Some of our other models, such as the URX II variations, include full length side and bottom rails and integrated front sights. These components provide the most amount of options with the least amount of interference.
Knights Armament designed this system to give shooters the maximum amount of options in their controls. Under this design all of the weapon's major controls can be accessed from either side of the lower receiver. Left-handed shooters see the immediate benefits of being able to access the weapon's controls in a more intuitive manner; however, there are a number of other benefits that right-handed shooters will enjoy under this system.
Competition shooters benefit from these controls from the increase of speed that is achieved through components such as the right-side bolt catch. Trainers enjoy the variety of options because they can watch their trainee from either side of the weapon and even manipulate the weapons controls from the non-operating side. KAC has also introduced modifications to the design such as the scalloped safety selector switch. This allows a lower profile for the selector switch on the non-operating side of the receiver which helps to relieve any interference between the switch and a shooters glove or hand. The Target Crown Barrel from Knights is found on our Enhanced Rifle and fundamentally designed to enhance accuracy. This 5R Cut Rifled Match Grade Alloy Steel barrel is tipped with a step crowned barrel and provides an obstacle free pathway for the projectile and any associated gasses. This recess provides protection for the important crown of the bore, and also serves an important role of providing a path that will not adversely affect the trajectory of the projectile. As a bullet travels through the barrel, gasses are also traveling before and behind it. The gases traveling in front of the bullet can become turbulent if captured within a flash hider or other type of muzzle device. This effect is negligible in most scenarios, but in long-range precision shooting, a target crown barrel is one more tool to increase accuracy.
The 45 degree Offset Rail Mounted Micro Folding Sights give a distinct advantage in target acquisition at various distances, as well as being a readily available back up in case an optic fails. These sights are the same make as our fully adjustable Micro Flip sights but are mounted onto a low-profile arm that fits the MILSTD 1913 rails and cants the sights 45 degrees. These sights fold down into a low-profile configuration which, combined with the arm that rests in the recesses of the rails, provides an extremely lightweight and unobtrusive system.
These sights maintain a different line of sight than a mounted optic. This means a quick and simple twist of the weapon provides immediate access to them. For weapons equipped with medium-long range optics, these sights afford the fastest alternative to engaging close range targets. If an optic becomes damaged or fails for some reason, these sights also provide immediate backup without having to remove the optic and waste vital time.
Systems like these were designed to give our Nation's Defenders the most intuitive and useful accessories to perform at the highest level.
The Carbon Cutter Bolt Carrier is a system Knights developed to help increase reliability and longevity in our rifles, particularly while firing suppressed. The serrated edges along the carriers lower edges serve a dual purpose: The first is to pull away any foreign material; the second is to provide an area for lubrication to pool.
The weapon will cycle and physically move the bolt carrier. When this happens, the serrated edges will draw away any foreign material that builds up along its path. This helps to provide a cleaner surface for the weapon to cycle through. The second benefit to those serrations is that they provide an area for lubrication to pool. Lubrication will normally be applied across the flat surface of the carrier and wear off. The slight pooling effect gained by these areas helps to keep the lubrication from wearing off too quickly and reapplies it when the carrier cycles. The overall effect of this Carbon Cutter Bolt Carrier is a cleaner, more reliable weapon over a longer period of time.
Our Pressure Reduction system is a feature designed to increase controllability and soften the rifles perceived recoil. This is achieved by employing unique lengths in our gas tubes and buffer tubes. On the 16 in SR25 EC and ECC models we utilize a rifle length gas system coupled with a buffer tube that is 3/4 in longer than the standard carbine length buffer. In some of the SR15 and SR16 models, KAC employs a similar system of lengthened components to achieve the same result.
By using this setup, the energy released when firing is spread out over more time within the weapon. This helps to relieve vertical kick in addition to a reduction in the rearward recoil force that is absorbed by a shooters shoulder. Various parts in the weapon system also see an increase in service life under this system. Our Pressure Reduction system serves to increase reliability and decrease fouling, especially in suppressed usage.
The Quick Detach Coupler (QDC) line of Sound Suppressors and Muzzle Devices are proprietary items designed for secure interoperability. The coupling device itself consists of multiple ball bearings arrayed in a circular pattern which fit into sockets specifically machined into various muzzle devices to accept the QDC. The bearings are aligned with the sockets by way of a V-shaped notch that seats the device onto an index pin. Once aligned, a simple twist of the outer retaining ring locks the device securely into place.
This system was developed to provide fast and easy operation and interoperability between weapons and suppressors. Knight's QDC line of sound suppressors all feature this method of attachment. Various muzzle devices, such as the QDC Flash Suppressors and the MAMS muzzle break, also feature the QDC pockets to accept sound suppressors equipped with this coupling device. Secure interoperability and intelligent, efficient design are the intended goals of this quick and easy technology.
