Magnum Research : BFR Revolvers
The Big Frame Revolver from Magnum Research introduced in 1999, also known as the BFR, is an all stainless steel, single action revolver with a 5 round cylinder. With Long and short cylinder models offered, with barrel lengths from 5 to 10 inches, the MRI BFR is hand made in the USA. Constructed entirely of 17- 4PH stainless steel, the bottom portion of the frame as well as the top strap is more beefy than most revolvers, making the Magnum Research BFR rated as one of the strongest revolvers ever made. The counter-bored, unfluted five shot cylinder features a free- wheeling pawl, making loading and unloading a snap. The transfer bar safety system is borrowed directly from Ruger, allowing for safe loaded carry in the field and during hunting. The barrel is sourced from Badger Barrels. The frame comes pre-drilled and tapped for a scope base and rings.
The BFR from Magnum Research is handmade by gun people for gun people. With each one of these revolvers is inspected meticulously and polished by hand, fitted and assembled by hand. As the nominee in 2002 for handgun of the year, the MRI Big Frame Revolver is chambered for cartridges that provide heart stopping power for the serious handgun hunter. With interchangeable cylinders in calibers that utilize the same bullet diameters, these freewheeling cylinders allow the shooter the ability to spin the cylinder either clockwise or even counter-clockwise to load/unload this handgun.
This Big Frame Revolver accuracy is ideal for hunting. The barrel cylinder alignment is held to under .002 concentricity, as each barrel are precision cut rifled. The barrel cylinder gap is less than .005 and all barrels are hand lapped and precision recessed crowned. The tolerances of the cylinder are so tight that best accuracy is available with all chambers. With the tolerances between the cylinder throat and internal barrel dimensions are matched to each caliber, many BFRs from Magnum Research calibers will shoot groups of well under 2 inches at 50 yards with mechanical sights; and all calibers feature twist rates specifically matched to the ammunition available and barrel lengths offered.
With top-of- the-line stainless alloys throughout the BFR, there are five different types of stainless steel used. This is done in order to produce the strongest and most weather resistant handgun available. Hand finished, the Magnum Research BFR comes with an amazing soft-brushed finish. This certain type of finish can easily be restored and is more weather resistant than satin finished handguns. For any shooters styles, the rear sights are fully adjustable and a perfect complement of different front sight heights allow guaranteed point of impact. Especially hardened, the all grip frame screws are plated hex head screws that will hold up under continuous repeats of fire with heavy loads. CNC (Computer Numeric Control) equipment machines each frame, grip frames, and cylinders. This process insures the dimensional integrity of all of the parts used in putting together this prime revolver. There are actually 70 features measured on the frame alone to insure the highest quality on each BFR. This shows that Magnum Research delivers on quality on all their handguns and rifles.
A transfer bar is used on the BFR. This bar will not allow the gun to fire unless the trigger is pulled back to release the hammer only after is has been cocked fully. Especially in hunting, there is no reason to carry the gun with a chamber that is empty. Another major safety feature of the BFR from Magnum Research is it will not fire if has been actually dropped.
One major and final aspect each shooter needs to realize is that this revolver, the BFR from Magnum Research, is designed and built as a heavy caliber handgun and will hold up to the test of repeated and sustained firing. This revolver is just not the standard revolver converted to a heavy caliber.
