I bought this gun at a local gun show because of its very small size for a .380 and because of its low price. As soon as I arrived home, I immediately disassembled it and removed the grip extension from the magazine.
I found disassembly to be somewhat difficult because the slide does not lock and instructions require that the magazine be inserted between the bolt and receiver in order to access slide disassembly button with a small punch.
The instructions say the diassembly button is on the left side of the pistol; however, it is actually on the right. Once the button is depressed, the slide can be lifted about 45-degrees and then slide forward for removal. The manual has a caution warning that the trigger should not be pulled or the weapon dropped or banged while the it is disassembled because parts could be misaligned requiring further disassembly.
Reassembly is the same procedure in reverse except the trigger must be pulled to move the hammer out of the way when the receiver is replaced on the frame. This is not a user-friendly disassembly process and would discourage routine cleaning after firing.
Since the receiver does not lock open, it would be difficult to even clean out the barrel with the gun assembled.
I loaded the gun with Federal personal defense ammunition then chambered a round and added an additional round to the magazine.
Though promotional information says it holds seven shots with one in the chamber, the .380 will hold only five rounds in the magazine for a total of six shots. Actually, the magazine will hold six rounds but will not lock so it is only functional with five rounds.
The pistol has a very long trigger pull which will take some getting used to. I found on the initial firing that the trigger sqwueezed nicely and smoothly but that I almost ran out of finger grip before the weapon fired. That last fraction of an inch of pull was so difficult that it caused a flinch, pulling the shots up and to the right.
I fired three rounds at 25 feet and missed the paper altogether. I then moved to ten feet and had two of the rounds in the target but four inches high and to the right of the bull. Firing my Bersa .380 from that distance would have had all rounds in a two-inch pattern in the bull.
I think practice will improve this situation and breaking in may smooth out the final fraction of an inch to allow more consistent shots. I had intended to remove all of the personal defense rounds and to fire practice bullets but I could not get the chambered round to enject by pulling the slide back.
So I loaded five practice rounds in the magazine fearing that I might have extraction problem but the gun functioned flawlessly when it was fired. The pistor is very well made and functions very smoothly when it is fired. All rounds extracted and ejected without any problems.
The pistol has no safety but the manufacturer claims it will not fire unless the trigger is pulled. The hammer is internal and cannot be pulled back except by the trigger.
This creates a decision as to whether to carry it with a round chambered or to leave the chamber empty, manually loading it if a situation requires it. Also, the difficulty in removing a chambered round will enter into this decision.
In summary, the Masterpiece Arms MPA Protector .380 is is a tiny, well-made, smoothly functioning .380 that could be an outstanding concealed carry pistol with just a little tweaking in the manufacturing process.
I have no regrets in buying this gun and might do it again because of its small size and precision quality.
