I've owned numerous red dot-style sights over the years, including Eotechs, Aimpoints, Trijicons and an earlier version of the Meprolight M21 w/Bullseye reticle.
My goal is a KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid!) optic that's rugged, reliable, easy to use, doesn't require batteries and works w/my mild astigmatism.

I liked the earlier version of the M21 but didn't care for the coarse W/E adjustments (1.7moa), reticle washout under certain lighting conditions or the reticle (the bullseye is fast up-close but lacks precision for longer shots).

After hearing that the latest version of the M21 was improved, I decided to take a chance on the M21-T w/triangle reticle.

I ordered on a Tuesday night, Hinterland shipped it on Wednesday via UPS 2nd Day Air and I received it on Thursday (kudos for fast shipping!).

In most respects the newer M21 is very similar to the earlier version w/the same excellent QD mount, ruggedness, bright tritium/fiber optic illumination, etc but differs in a few key areas:

1) W/E adjustments are now 1moa like most RDS' instead of 1.7moa.

2) Fiber optics are more efficient so reticle washout is still possible but more difficult to achieve.

I tested the M21 in varying light conditions and reticle washout only occurred twice:

When using a taclight at night at very close range while aiming at a light-colored target and when aiming from a dark room out a window into bright sunlight (however, as I approached the window the M21's frontside fiber optic collectors kicked in and at appx 2' from the window the reticle was bright and usable).

3) For my needs the triangle reticle is superior to the bullseye reticle as I find the triangle fast on-target w/the tip of the triangle providing a precision aiming point for longer shots.

The nearest competitor to the M21 are Trijicon's RX30 (6.5moa dot) and RX34 (4.5moa dot).

Both use similar tritium/fiber optic illumination w/the Trijicons having a huge FOV (field of view) through their 42mm objective.

However, I found the Trijicons dots to bloom/distort badly in bright sunlight (the M21's reticle stays sharp and crisp regardless of brightness), the mount isn't QD unless you pay significantly more and the dots aren't as precise as the M21's triangle at longer ranges.

W/the M21's tritium guaranteed for 10yrs I believe the M21 w/triangle reticle is the best KISS optic currently available.

I give it 4.5 stars due to the still-existing potential for reticle washout under certain lighting conditions.
