Reviews of Sig Model 556 Quad Rail Rifle R55616BPSRD, 223 Rem./5.56 Nato, Semi-Auto, 16 in, Folding Swiss Style Stock, Black Finish, 30 + 1 Rd

A very solid-shooting rifle that does not rattle (as compared to the standard M-16 rifles that I used in the Army). The gas piston operating rod system works flawlessly; I found little to no residue buildup in the receiver after firing dozens of rounds from different manufacturers.

Although I have not fired more than a few hundred rounds through it to-date, there have been no stoppages or failures to eject. In fact, this rifle ejects spent casings with prejudice - launching them up to 15 feet away from the rifle (and over the guy sitting in the lane to my right).

Whether firing from a fixed position, on a table, standing, or even with the stock folded, controlling the weapon, even with rapid firing, was very easy. This may be a result of the slightly heavy weight, though the rifle is very well balanced compared to other variants of the SIG 556 series which have larger forearms which tends to make them "front-heavy."

The sights are easy to adjust, and common-sensical to use, making acquisition of targets at various ranges relatively easy, though I personally am considering purchasing a red-dot or holographic site to simplify for my older eyes.

I have both standard AR-15 magazines, the SIG magazine that came with the rifle, and MAGPUL magazines; the SIG accepts them all equally well with no complaints.

The trigger pull is not too lite and allows for crisp, rapid firing where necessary. The folding stock takes a little getting used to and can be slightly cumbersome initially - the locking mechanism that holds it folded to the side of the rifle can be hard to "lock" and "unlock" when new but appears to be getting easier with use.

The charging handle is a favorite feature; I don't have too necessarily lift my head off of the stock in order to operate it - as compared to the AR-15 where one must move his head out of the way, pull the charging handle back, then re-seat it.

Disassembly takes a little practice but I found it to be comparable to the AR-15 in practice. Once again, the gas-piston operating rod assembly comes out easily, as does the recoil spring, and are very easy to clean and reinstall.

The rifle came with rubber forearm grips to mount to the quad picatinny rails, which enables almost any imaginable configuration for your likes. I mounted a MAGPUL vertical forearm grip, as well as a bipod assembly, neither of which interfered with the operation of the other.

Also, it comes ready-made for tactical slings.

Overall, I give the SIG five stars within it's price range. Although I'm sure there are likely better rifles out there - I doubt there are any within this price range that can compete well.

If you are on the fence between an AR-15 versus the SIG 556, I believe you will not be disappointed with the SIG.
