I have 4 H&R single shot shotguns and can't find a fault with any of them. They are cheap, made in the USA, simple, reliable, accurate, balanced, lightweight, easy to maintain, and functional.
Some complain about the recoil, but is easily fixed by a proper hold and you can put weight in the stock if you really want to. The 20 gauge is my go to gun for smaller framed company and family members.
I use my H&R/NEFs for hunting, target shooting, plinking, and backyard pest shooting. They have few parts and are very easy to break down and clean, as well as swap barrels, and they always work.
Great first shotgun for you, then your kids, then their children, and so on and so forth. One of my single shots is over 40 years old and you'd ever know it.

Affordable well built dependable shotgun. Walnut stock for durability and good looks. In November of 2000, Marlin purchased the assets of H&R 1871 Inc, a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of shotguns and rifles.
Founded in 1871, and now located in Gardner, Massachusetts, today H&R 1871 employs over 200 people. Marketing its products under the brand names of Harrington & Richardson and New England Firearms, H&R 1871 is the largest manufacturer of single shot shotguns and rifles in the world.
