The model 84164, Remington made a good combination of stock, trigger and barrel to combine for a rifle with a manageable price. A no frills setup, for windy, dusty, muggy wet days at the range.
The stock and heavy barrel were a requirement for me with this caliber, 300 WinMag. The stock gives me the length I require for my long arms, and the tall comb puts my eyes close to alignment with the scope. The heavy Barrel, to assist not only with keeping the heat from spoiling that tenth or twentieth shot at the range but to also assist with the recoil of the 300 WinMag, by virtue of it's weight over a lighter barreled model.
The Remington is not a perfect dog. The 40X trigger needed some work. My 84164 trigger was no where close to 31/2 lbs when delivered. But with a little work (internet) I'm actually happy with this Remington trigger. The action, a little gritty at first, but setting in front of the TV with my wife and working the action through several series of her favorite flix and walla, the action is smoothing out, and my wife is happy.
The Remington 700 M40 Long Range is a winner for me, LOCK STOCK and BARREL, plus American made..

Remington 700 M40 Long Range is exactly what I was looking for; a quality heavy barreled rifle that is a solid crossover between a hunting rifle and a target rifle. Heavy duty and comfortable B&C stock, ready for bipod and sling. Heavy at 9 pounds, stripped, but I wanted the added weight to help manage recoil. Ridiculous value compared to dedicated target guns and custom hunting rifles. Provides a solid baseline for any upgrades or additions. Accuracy probably limited only by the ability of this experienced but retired military shooter. Clean trigger produced post-recall.

Rifle has decent bulk which helps out with recoil. Fit and finish are above average. Barrel appears to be free floated which should help out with accuracy. Spent a little bit of time working on trigger and have gotten pull down to around 3 lbs with more room for improvement. With handloads and 150 grain bullets have been able to get around 1" groups at 100 yards in initial load development. Is definitely a gun to be shot from a rest or
bi-pod...weight and bulky nature would make an offhand/unsupported shot difficult. Overall a really good value for the money considering the stock and 700 action.
