I have been shooting and hand loading for this rifle since December 2008. My 458 LOTT is equipped with a Leupold VX-7, 1.5x6 telescopic sight. The rifle will shoot one inch groups with 500 grain Hornady bullets at 2,300 fps. Below are my comments:
Ruger Model 77 RMS MK II, Magnum Action, 458 LOTT
Warning: This rifle is capable of breaking your right hand, collarbone, cheekbone and ramming the telescopic sight into your eye, and that is with the first shot. Read what is below and be very careful!!!
This rifle is a lot of fun to shoot if you are comfortable shooting a 338 Winchester Magnum, 375 H&H Magnum or larger caliber. If you weigh under150 pounds and are less than 5’6” tall you may very well be injured shooting this rifle.
The first time you fire this rifle: Shoot from a standing position so you can be driven backwards by the recoil. Wrap the sling around your left forearm. Grip the fore-end very firmly with your left hand.
Slide your right hand lower than normal on the pistol grip while still easily reaching the trigger and grip very firmly. This will prevent the bolt handle from hitting your right hand when the rifle rotates clockwise while recoiling. Push your cheek very firmly against the stock while still being able to see through the telescopic sight.
This will cause your head to recoil with the stock and prevent the scope from ramming into your eye. Be sure the sight is set on 1.5 power so you can keep your eye as far as possible from the lens. Pull back towards your shoulder with both your right hand and your left hand.
Keep your feet about 18 to 24 inches apart and lean forward slightly. The idea is to let the rifle push you back, NOT for you to stand still and the rifle to recoil.
This will prevent the rifle from breaking your collarbone. The very first time you fire this rifle, if you follow the above, you will not be hurt but you will still be surprised by the amount of recoil. Firing 3 to 5 rounds may cause your vision to become blurry. DO NOT fire this rifle from a bench-rest until you feel comfortable firing off-hand.
This rifle is in stock, factory condition. No modifications of any kind have been made. The rifle has a 1.5x6 power Leupold VX-7 scope. Try setting the scope on 1.5 power and shoot with both eyes open. The cross hairs seem to just appear on the target. It is by far the fastest way to shoot.
Maximum suggested Load: 500 Grain soft point or solid bullet ahead of 86.8 Grains of Winchester 748 powder with a Winchester WLRM Magnum primer will give about 2,300 fps and 6,000 ft-lb of energy.
You can also fire the shorter 458 Winchester Magnum cartridges in this rifle. They will drive a 500 grain bullet about 2,000 fps. It is like shooting 22 shorts in a rifle chambered for 22 Long Rifle. The 458 LOTT has a case that is 3/8” longer that the 458 Winchester Magnum.
This is a true stopping rifle and is extremely accurate. However, the blunt nose bullet looses velocity very rapidly. It is best used on large animals at less than 50 yards. It will stop or turn a charging elephant.
