What would happen if you put a Glock 26 slide and barrel on a Glockk 19 frame? Steyr basically did that sort of integration for its M-A1 duty pistol and its sub-compact S-A1. I think the new design works just fine.
A a striker-fired pistol, the Steyr C9-A1 integrates the full size frame from its duty pistol, the M-A1, with the slide and barrel from its sub-compact model, the S-A1. And, according to its 2011 promotional literature, added an improved trigger with faster reset. They have a winner...here's why...
The angle between the handle and the slide is a bit more acute, more so than say, on a Glock. Since I shoot “old school” Fairbairn-Applegate point & shoot, the more acute the angle the better for natural point ability and, for me, more hits on target.
The second point in the Steyr’s favor is the trapezoid sight. For combat shooting they are just outstanding. Finally, there is very little recoil. The weight and balance of the pistol is exceptional. The pistol also has a 15 round capacity.
It is not exactly a pocket pistol, although that depends on how big your pockets are. Although I can conceal it in my jeans pocket with a Kydex trigger guard; it is probably better suited for IWB carry or appendix carry.
I finally found a relatively inexpensive sub-compact light for the rail, and have made it my bedside defense gun. Very fast field strip and cold forged barrel....yes, very nice.
Conclusion: it is a fun gun to shoot, and the design and sights seem to help me get more hits on target in stress shooting.
