I found these a few weeks ago while looking for lead free 12ga slugs for the last bear season with hounds in California. I found Winchester makes a Super-X zinc slug that said it is specifically made for smooth bore.
I found them at Herb Bower's in Fresno. They only had 3/4 ounce 2.75 inches, and they charged a lot more than anyone online (I did not have time to wait for shipping and had to buy them in the store). By the time I got to camp it was dark and I did not have a place to test fire them.
I did cut one open. I found it was not foster style at all, and it was a sabot, although not traditional. It looked like a hockey puck, and was a perfect cylinder shape, flat on bottom and top, and was sitting in a red wad, smooth on all sides without rifling.
I hesitated to use it, but the only other option was a scoped rifle, and the hounds men did not like that and would rather me use the shotgun. Within one hour of sunrise they had a 200 pound bear treed. I took my shot from about 35 yards.
The first round hit perfectly through both lungs, and the heart. The bear began to stand and I fired both other rounds. The second went through the shoulder, and the third scalped him. After butchering him, I found each round seemed to make a perfect puncture wound, and did not open up.
But where they hit bone, they splintered it and caused a lot of damage. Each round hit exactly where I was aiming and penetrated completely. It was like shooting it with a wad cutter that was half an inch in diameter. I was happy with the performance.
As far as accuracy, I felt the rounds were too expensive to pattern after I had shot the bear. At 35 yards they were dead on in the bear.
My shotgun was a Remington 870 VangComp with an 18.5" barrel.
If you are not familiar with VangComp, he is a gunsmith in Arizona who tricks out tactical shotguns. Part of his process is lengthening the forcing cone and back boring it.
That accurizes slugs and tightens the pattern for shot. At 50 yards with foster slugs, I can shot 3" groups. With buckshot at 15 yards, the pattern is the size of a fist.
I use it for hunting coyotes with buckshot and have killed them at 75 yards using 00, and at 80 yards with # 4 buck.

Excellent product! I was able to make a 3" group at 50 yards with these slugs. I absolutely go back and order some more.
