I LOVE this damn rifle!!!! When I bought it a little over a year ago, it was quite a bit cheaper than can be found today (but all guns were)... At the time Hinterland had the best price I could find (I havent price compared lately, so I can't be certain how it is these days)...
I am in CA (highly restricted) so the 10 round proprietary mag is no big deal to me... however, they are pretty expensive ($25 if you are lucky, not uncommon to be $40+)... not easy to find (Hinterland doesnt have them) but they can be found on GB every now & then for $25... mine came with only one mag, so buying an extra 11 was a bit pricy (can never have too many though :D)
It's a Yugo style variant - so after market quad rails and specialties like TWS Dogleg (look it up, it's worth it) have to be specific to Yugo (the dust cover rail is useless, thus the TWS dogleg)... The PAP is made by Zastava who is very reputable and have been making quality firearms in Serbia for decades (dating back to Yugoslavia)... can't go wrong with a reputable manufacturer that makes weapons for Euro military (granted, the PAP is a civilian version of M70)...
The thumb-hole grip is well thought for US civilian use (knowing several states ban pistol grips - sad but true) - but I'm in ultra-restrictive CA that has even banned thumb-hole grips (more dangerous of course *sarcasm*) - but this was a complete non-issue because before many other retailers were savvy about legal allowance (and even before manufactures were using mag locks {aka bullet buttons}), Hinterland stepped up and installed one on this rifle to make it CA compliant and legal to be shipped to me (at the time one of the very few in CA - probably still rare)...
So kudos to Hinterland for being pro second amendment and assisting fellow enthusiasts in CA! Piss on EAA for not taking the minor step in making this compliant - that so many other manufactures and distributors have (such as S&W M&P15, Arsenal Saiga, etc)... It's built thoughtfully and with quality by Zastava and a very, very good value.
Yugo's are said to be the next best quality AK (after Russian) - from Mr. Kalashnikov himself. I would trust this rifle in any down & durty scenario - but of course it's main duty is at the range (as would be for anyone reading this)... it's very accurate (seriously rivals my AR at 100 yrds) and never malfunctioned (well over 2K rounds)...
It's not the lightest AK (variant) especially after installing quad rail - but it is very reliable and accurate - I wont sell mine - and without a doubt would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality AK variant!
BTW, the TWS Dogleg I mentioned earlier - will allow me to remove the heavy quad rail and re-install the poly hand-guards (mounting RDS to the rear)... this will definitely make things lighter!
Thanks Hinterland for hooking me up with this rifle!
