The Starfire hollow point's impressive performance comes from its unique rib and flute cavity design. Upon impact, pressure from in coming fluidic material creates lateral pressure on the ribs, forcing instant, extremely reliable expansion, assisted by a notched jacket mouth.

I don't usually buy ammo at my local gun shop as the selection is fairly limited and prices aren't great but I do try to support him enough so he can stay in business.
I was looking for some .380 corbon ammo and all he had was this PMC starfire. I'd never heard of it but picked up a couple boxes. Some online reviews said this is "junk ammo" so I did a little back yard ballistics testing.
My medium was one layer of denim,1/2 inch plywood, 12 inches of very wet newspaper, another 1/2 inch plywood and finally a couple inches of sand to catch the bullet and not put a hole in the bottom of my bucket.
My control was FMJ Tulamo. I only tested 3 rounds and all expanded out of my Ruger LCP with a nice flower pattern. The FMJ rounds were slightly roughed up but held their shape completely. Both rounds were recovered in the sand.
My verdict is these are O.K. The bullets have a heavy copper base and it appears the jacket thins as it approaches the tip of the bullet. This appeared to keep the bulk of the weight in tact in the butt of the round but was soft and thin enough at the tip to allow for expansion.
Are these the "best" self defense rounds for a .380? I don't know, there are probably some "better" options but these did prove completely reliable in my LCP and my bubba expansion test was acceptable to me.
Not sure if I'll buy them again but I wouldn't hesitate if the price was right.
