I bought my Ruger compact rifle in 2003. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that it doesn't come with Iron Sights. They are important to me. The gun is very light - 6 pounds. The barrel length is 16& 1/4 " I believe. It has a laminated gray stock with stainless metal. I have never cleaned this gun. Shame on me. It is a great tool. I use it in all kinds of weather. Check zero{ 1 to 5 shots } and use it primarily for deer hunting. It shoots better than I can, but I am a fair shot. I usually get 2 sometimes 3 deer per year with it. The reason it doesn't have Iron Sights is because the barrel is too thin to mount a front sight. Before I bought this rifle, I hunted with a Winchester Model 94 A E, 7 30 waters rifle with see-through scope mounts. I switched because there was only 1 choice of bullet for that rifle, and I thought I wanted to start reloading. After I got the Ruger, I found a place to buy cheap ammo -$4.50 per box of 20. I bought 120 rounds to shoot to get used to a bolt action, having used a lever 30 years. I still like levers. The ammo was 140 gr. hollow point boat tail - the same type and weight I intended to use, in a higher quality, brand name. I bought some of the better bullets, but I have started to use the cheap brand all the time. They shoot well and bring home the venison, usually with one shot. Gone are the days of the $4.50 ammo. I was lucky to buy plenty when it was available. My son and I are set for a few more years - 15 or 20 at the current rate. My beef about the lack of Iron Sights is I have had coyotes get too close to shoot with my scope set on 3 power. If something screws with your scope on a hunt, looking down the side of the barrel gives you a chance, but the results are questionable and not recommended. This review made me feel better, and I hope it helps someone. I will keep this gun. I may even clean it someday. But it doesn't seem to need it, yet.
