Product Description

The Savage MSR 15 Valkyrie gets maximum performance from the 224 Valkyrie cartridge, which was pioneered by Federal PremiumAmmunition to offer the best ballistics of any MSR 15 caliber. It delivers supersonic velocities at as far as 1,300 yards, extremely flat trajectories and match accuracy. Plus it produces only half the recoil of larger cartridges needed to achieve comparable trajectories. The competition-ready MSR 15 Valkyrie gets the most from the cartridge's unprecedented capabilities with an upgraded 18" barrel with 5R rifling and a crisp two-stage trigger. Its Elite Series cerakote finish forms a tough, protective layer on the upper and lower, and its adjustable mid-length gas system can be customized to specific ammunition for the most reliable cycling.

There are multiple ways to get into 224 Valkyrie these days; most notable is to get a complete upper and bolt (or complete BCG) and slap that on an existing AR lower and go long (you'd also need 6.8 SPC mags to realize full capacity). Companies like PSA on the low end and JP on the high end make this possible, but for me as an existing Savage owner (love my MSR15 Recon), this made more sense to me. Savage's ability to crank out accuracy and barrel performance that belies their price point is legendary, and the idea of having a complete and warranty-covered rifle was personally preferable to having an upper and a BCG laying around to throw on an existing lower. The only immediate downside to 224 right now is the availability of ammo as Federal is the lone supplier in the marketplace today. Federal developed the round and their stuff is good enough, but Hornady is set to launch their Valkyrie offering and others are sure to follow suit (would love to see what Black Hills' take on 224 would be). Competition is never a bad thing, especially when it comes to ammo. So yeah, maybe I'm a little biased because I already have good vibes for Savage based on owning some of their stuff already, but what can I say, their value quotient is HIGH, and the out of the box accuracy is terrific. If you're considering going 224, this is a great place to start (and Hinterland has about the best deal on it at the time of this writing).
